Idaho Black History Museum, Boise ID

Three well-tended buildings comprising the Idaho Black History Museum are peacefully situated in Boise's Julia Davis Park on a tree-shaded path just beyond the Historical Museum.

One of two African American churches that were founded by Boiseans in 1908, St. Paul's Baptist Church was built entirely by skilled carpenter/pastor Reverend William Riley Hardy and his congregants in 1921.
Open Saturdays, Sundays and by appointment, I was sad to have missed the opportunity to enter on my weekday visit. However, a delightful discovery was the Museum's website, www.ibhm.org, as it offers, among other information, valuable suggestions for gathering one's genealogical data. Not surprisingly, there is special emphasis on African Americans, listing unique traits of elders that differ from other cultural groups, reasons for certain beliefs and behaviors, and tips for approaching them to sensitively glean valuable historical information.
